What is Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon Sinuplasty is a minimally invasive, cutting edge technology that is recommended to treat patients suffering from chronic sinusitis. This unique procedure has been clinically proven to be a safe and effective treatment for adults and children with chronic sinusitis who have painful sinusitis symptoms and are not responding to medications. Unlike traditional sinus surgery, it does not include the removal of bone or tissue from the nose which allows patients to return to normal activities quickly.

What Makes Balloon Sinuplasty Unique?

Balloon Sinuplasty can be performed right in the ENT doctor’s office with local anesthesia. A small, flexible balloon catheter is inserted into the nose to reach the inflamed sinus. The sinus balloon is then slowly inflated to effectively open up blocked sinus passageways and facilitate drainage of the mucus that is built up. Since Balloon Sinuplasty is less invasive than traditional sinus surgery, you don’t need nasal packing or to take time off from work.

What is Chronic Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is a condition in which the cavities around nasal passages (sinuses) become inflamed and swollen. This swelling causes the openings of the nose to be blocked so that the mucus inside can no longer drain out. When the mucus cannot drain, the pressure of the blocked fluid creates pain in the face and impairs breathing. Endoscopic sinus surgery is designed to increase the amount of air flowing through the sinuses and allow mucus to drain properly out of the nose.

The Center for Disease Control reports sinusitis is one of the most prevalent of human diseases, second only to periodontal disease. About 1 in 7 Americans are affected by chronic sinusitis. If you have frequent sinusitis, or have an infection that lasts longer than three months, you may have chronic sinusitis. Symptoms include facial pain, sinus headaches, persistent congestion, chronic snoring and unrelenting fatigue. For patients with chronic symptoms who are not responding well to medications, Balloon Sinuplasty is a safe and effective option.
